PPTX file extensions became the standard for Microsoft Office 2007’s PowerPoint program. Like the PPT predecessor, PPTX files store presentations containing slides of images, text, animation, audio, video, effects, charts, graphs, and more. Where PPT was binary based, PPTX is Open XML based and uses ZIP compression. PowerPoint 2011 allows screen capturing to insert screenshots of the desktop or other programs into presentations and the backgrounds of images can be removed and edited. Even with the new file extension, PowerPoint faces a lot of criticism in relation to the usage and effectiveness of the program when used inefficiently.PPTX files use the ECMA-376 standard for Office Open XML. Any program using XML can access this file information. PPTX files are created by zipping the directory where the information contained matches the OPC structure. The advantage of PPTX over PPT is the ease of use, file data management, and recovery. The PPTX files are not completely in XML because there are some sections of binary dabs located in the files. Approximately 95% of presentation software on the market is taken up by PowerPoint programs. PPTX and PPT presentations are capable of many in-program effects, animations, and presentation techniques.
